There are several ways to get scholarship and grants. Here are some basic guidelines:
-Families with a college bound senior should submit the FAFSA on around October 1st but not before this date at http://www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Use your paychecks from the "Prior Prior Year" and submit this form in the fall. The FAFSA website has several resources for planning and calculating college costs. If Seniors received Medicaid at any time they may want to call the State of MI to ask if they qualify for the TIP scholarship. The phone number is 888-447-2687 and information can be found at www.michigan.gov/ssg.
Michigan Competitive Scholarship: Eligibility for this scholarship is now based on the SAT score. Minimum score for eligibility is 1200. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
-It is important to wait until you receive your award letter (financial aid package) from each college before making the final decision on your college/training institute. The Award letter is not issued until the spring.
-The largest amounts of scholarship/award money come directly from the college and are often based on GPA. This money also renews each year if a certain GPA is maintained. Most every college has this listed on the Scholarship and Financial Aid section of their website. Always ask if the college will automatically consider you through your admission application OR is there a separate scholarship application and what is the deadline?
-Listen for Local Scholarships through the school announcements. Paper applications will be available at Mrs. Weinfeld's desk.
-A great strategy is to look for guaranteed scholarships during your freshman year of high school. For example, CMU offers a guaranteed scholarship if you have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Researching scholarship criteria early allows a freshman time to reach the scholarship eligibility criteria. Not all colleges have guaranteed scholarships.
-Attached are some scholarship search engines. There are several options here. Many students like Fastweb, Cappex and http://schoolsoup.com/scholarship-directory.
