Michigan Comprehensive Counseling American School Counseling Model
There are a number of professional organizations that explain and support the unique role of a school counselor which is much different than a community therapist. A Masters Degree in School Counseling requires more credit hours than any other graduate degree. Professional School Counselors are required to have a "School Counseling License/NT" and be registered under the State of Michigan as a Licensed School Counselor. Many School Counselors have an LPC (License Professional Counselor) as well. A common question is the difference between a School Counselor and a Counselor (outside of school) or Professional Therapist. The two counseling professions are much different. A School Counselor assists students in their daily life at school in goal setting for 4 years as well as upon graduation. A good distinction between the two is the following-if a student has a temporary emotional situation a School Counselor can listen and support them so that a student can make it through the day and access their education. A student with a more severe situation or mental health struggles would be referred to a counselor or therapist outside of the school setting. School Counselors support students in successfully navigation during the 4 years of high school and in meeting the Michigan graduation requirements. They also guide students in making choices for beyond high school.
The goal of the Michigan School Counselor Association (MSCA) is to be the leading advocate for the role and programs of professional school counselors. MSCA strives to provide meaningful growth and development opportunities for professional school counselors. By demonstrating visionary leadership in developing new and supportive services and programs for members, the MSCA maintains an organizational structure that provides a strong resource base from which to operate.
