Testing Timeline
Students should always give their best effort. Many scholarships, college admission decisions, and options to enroll in college and other upper level classes are based on test scores. All testing scores are an official indication of the student's progress. The purpose for testing is:
1) Testing is a state mandate
2) Colleges use test scores as part of the college admission decision

9th/10th Grade- All Students take the PSAT test (in both 9th and 10th grade). This is beneficial because it is a version of the SAT college admission test. The PSAT test prepares students for the SAT and essentially serves as a study guide. To study students should create an account at KHANacademy.org as this is the only approved study guide and it happens to be free. Students do not need to sign up for this test the first time. However, Students that do well are encouraged to register, pay and take the PSAT in October of their Junior year. The October test results from Junior year allows the student to be part of the NMSQT scholarship search. "National Merit Scholars" are named based on the October test. Sophomores may also sign up for the October test as a practice. This is optional, the cost is $20.00 and students can sign up with Mrs. Doyle in the Counseling Office. There will always be a PSAT in October. Students will typically take the PSAT the first two times (for free) during the spring of their 9th and 10th grade year. If students are only going to pay to take the PSAT one time then it would be better to take it as a Junior because Junior year scores are used in the National Merit Scholar determination. All 9th and 10th grade students will take the test at no cost at somepoint during their 9th and 10th grade academic year.
11th Grade-All Juniors take the SAT in April. They do not need to sign up. The test is a graduation requirement and best effort is required. This is the State of Michigan's testing assessment and happens to be a college admission score. Students can still pay and register to take the ACT (actstudent.org) and colleges will take the ACT or SAT. It is recommended to take both tests. It is popular for students to also take the SAT an additional time (register at collegeboard.com).
* Check with your potential schools. Many colleges are now "test optional".
12th Grade-There may be a some Seniors that sign up for the
ACT or SAT to enhance scores for scholarship or college admission purposes.
